CULTURE NEWS

  • Luis Valdez, a playwright born to migrant farm workers in California, was honored at the Monterey County Board of Supervisors meeting for his work on 'Zoot Suit' and 'La Bamba'. He is also the founding artistic director of The Farm Workers Theater in San Juan Bautista—this honor marks a milestone in his career—reflecting his major role in local arts.  KSBW
  • Los Tigres del Norte arrived in Salinas on Tuesday and were honored with Lifetime Recognition by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, which declared June 10 as Los Tigres del Norte Day — an honor previously given only to NFL legend Joe Kapp. The band, which began performing in 1968, has sold over 40 million records — and their work supporting immigrants continues to inspire many.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rumors about ICE activity on Tuesday were largely unfounded across the Central Coast as only one targeted detention was confirmed in Soledad by the Rapid Response Network—KSBW later reached out to ICE and received confirmation that they got the inquiry.  KSBW
  • Today the Monterey County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to mark 50 years since California banned the short handled hoe used by farmworkers for weeding in Salinas Valley. Farmworkers had protested its use because it forced them to stay bent over for long hours—causing lasting injuries before the tool was outlawed in 1975.  KSBW
