COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local leaders at a special meeting celebrated 50 years since Monterey County banned the short-handled tool El Cortito—known for causing lasting injuries to farm workers—and historians shared accounts of its harmful effects; the Board of Supervisors will honor Los Tigres del Norte by declaring every June 10 as their day.  KION
  • Today, Hartnell College’s Alisal Campus in Salinas hosted a free car show and job fair that brought together car enthusiasts+families with live music, food trucks and campus tours highlighting vocational training. The event, organized in partnership with the Agricultural, Business and Technology Institute+ the Alisal Union School District, featured over 100 vehicles with registration fees funding student scholarships.  KSBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Monterey County Board of Supervisors drafted a letter supporting North Salinas High School track star Clara Adams, who lost her 400-meter state title after celebrating her win by using a fire extinguisher in a post-race moment. The board will vote soon to send the letter to the California Interscholastic Federation—saying the punishment seems too harsh and unlike past rules.  KSBW
  • The College World Series will begin Friday as Oregon State pitcher Eric Segura—a Monterey County native from Salinas—prepares to take the mound after recording 77 strikeouts in 56.2 innings with eight wins this season. Oregon State will face Louisville, which holds a 40-22 record, as the series showcases local talent on the Central Coast.  KSBW
  • Luke Brandler of Stevenson golf carded a 4-under 67 — his score led the Pirates to their first state team title in 13 years. Junior shortstop Gigi Rossi of Salinas softball hit a walk-off single in extra innings — she also hit a homer as her team won the Northern California Division II title game over Liberty.  Monterey Herald
