COMMUNITY NEWS

  • PG&E reported today at 4 a.m. that over 3,000 people lost power in Castroville—outages reached Marina, Salinas and Prunedale, with power expected to be restored by 11 a.m.  KION

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Workers at the Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling factory at 715 Vanderberg Street in Salinas received notices today that the plant will close permanently on August 1; company officials said the decision will consolidate operations into the San Jose Distribution Center. Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue said he is disappointed by the closure and will follow up to see if the decision can be reconsidered.  KSBW

  • The California Rodeo Salinas is seeking singers to perform the national anthem at the Big Week Bull Riding event on July 16 and at shows from July 17 to July 20. Interested applicants must submit their applications with a link to a previous performance by June 15 — successful candidates will be notified by July 1.  KSBW
  • Marlo Kaleookalani Lualemana of Earthbound Tattoo Studio in Sand City uses her artistic talent and cultural heritage to offer a healing space where clients share personal stories and get custom tattoos drawn freehand with Sharpie. She has run her studio for 10 years and her work has attracted clients from across the world+ she will graduate this fall with a degree in Hawaiian Pacific studies.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A groundbreaking on May 9 marked the start of a state project using $15 million to build a safe water system on Struve—Springfield roads so residents in Moss Landing can have clean water. The system will first serve a score of homes—including a mobile home park for farm workers—and later expand to serve nearly 400 people to treat dangerous chemicals in their water.  Monterey Herald
  • Travelers on Highway 1—about 12 miles south of Carmel—should plan for a full road closure starting Sunday at 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Monday due to a concrete deck pour.  Monterey Herald
  • Twenty-four Pajaro residents completed a 22-hour FEMA CERT training in Spanish to prepare their community for disasters—this group is the first Spanish-language CERT team in Pajaro and received emergency tools and skills over three Sundays in March.
