  • New Leaf Energy withdrew its permit application for a battery storage facility just outside Watsonville (citing local delays and financial risks) and will seek approval through the California Energy Commission while meeting environmental and safety reviews.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six Monterey County girls have been selected to attend the 2026 LPGA Girls Golf Leadership Academy in Pembroke Pines, Florida — a two-day event at the Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racquet Club designed to build leadership, teamwork, and golf skills as part of the First Tee Program.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County officials warn residents who bought grapevines or fruit trees at Costco in Salinas between April 21 and May 19 (period of concern) to isolate the plants and contact the agricultural office for an inspection as an invasive pest connected to a vineyard disease has been found.  KSBW
  • Agriculture officials reported finding the invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter on plants purchased at a Costco in northern California today—urging shoppers to inspect their new plants to help prevent further spread.  KION

HEALTH NEWS

  • The California Department of Public Health reported that a wild mushroom poisoning outbreak from November to May 22 caused 50 cases and four deaths in nine counties, including Monterey County. The agency urged locals to avoid picking or eating wild mushrooms (such as Death Caps and Western Destroying Angels) to prevent serious liver damage.  KSBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Monterey County Futbol Club players Dante Williams and Alejandro Cano will represent Puerto Rico and El Salvador in FIFA friendlies next week; Williams is set to play Saudi Arabia on June 5 in Austin while Cano will face South Korea on June 3 and Qatar on June 6.  Monterey Herald
  • A year after losing her CIF 400 title for spraying her shoes with a fire extinguisher at North Salinas High, Clara Adams will return as the favorite at the state track meet today for Long Beach Wilson.  Monterey Herald
  • Salinas graduate Nathan Martorella (a local standout) turned half of his spring hits into extra bases for the Miami Marlins Triple A team in Jacksonville and is looking to overcome an early season slump.  Monterey Herald
