  • During a recent motorsports weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, a charity fashion show featured five shelter dogs walking the runway with drivers' wives and girlfriends. The event raised funds for SPCA Monterey County, which received a $500 donation to support its animal care efforts.  KAZU
  • Central California sky watchers will see a rare blue moon and micromoon on May 31 at 4:45 a.m. ET, and select bars will serve blue-colored beer from May 29 to May 31 — check local forecasts for clear views.  The Californian
  • SPCA Monterey County will hold an event on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the SPCA Veterinary Clinic (1002 Monterey-Salinas Highway) in Salinas, offering free microchips and $25 vaccinations to help reunite lost pets; the service is for pets 8 weeks and older and no appointment is required.  KSBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, Carmel's historic Forest Theater hosts an outdoor performance of Carmina Burana with pre-concert picnicking beginning at 6 p.m. and a 7:30 p.m. show; later in June, the Monterey Peninsula features Summerfest concerts from June 9-14 and live theatre productions opening on June 11 and 18 (tickets required).  Monterey Herald

  • Salinas middle-schooler Seren Kim (student at La Mesa Elementary) will compete in the 101st Scripps National Spelling Bee at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC from May 26 to 28; she tied for 100th place last year among 247 spellers.  The Californian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Monterey County Civil Grand Jury report recommends that local agencies boost projects to curb seawater intrusion, which threatens Salinas agriculture. The report urges the Board of Supervisors, Monterey County Water Resources Agency, and Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency to hold more public workshops and explore new plans.  Monterey Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three Monterey nonprofits have announced a $110,000 fund to help residents displaced by the Casanova Plaza fire, and Monterey County is holding budget hearings this week at the county government center in Salinas on a $2.34 billion proposal that eliminates 111 jobs.  KAZU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kelsey Pfendler, a 31-year-old rower, left Monterey on May 21 aboard her boat Lily and is trying to become the first American woman to row solo to Hawaii on a 2,400-mile journey while preparing for rough seas ahead.  KSBW
  • The Stevenson high school golf team will defend its state title after finishing second Tuesday at the Northern California finals + will compete in the state championships later.  Monterey Herald
  • Lee's record-tying homer helped Monterey advance to the CCS Division II softball finals for the fourth time in five years, while Alisal will make its first DI final appearance. The decisive playoff game unfolded recently in local tournament action.  Monterey Herald
