COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Monterey Regional Airport hosted its inaugural seasonal non-stop flight to Chicago O'Hare on Saturday with Chicago-style festivities welcoming passengers. The service runs on Thursdays through August and many locals have requested the direct flight to avoid layovers.  KSBW
  • Today, dozens gathered at Fort Ord Monument in Marina to honor Sergeant Allan MacDonald, his horse Comanche and all veterans on Memorial Day weekend. Family members accepted the tribute as local leaders recalled Fort Ord's long military history.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Panetta Lecture Series finale will take place at Monterey Conference Center on June 1 at 7 p.m., featuring panelists Rahm Emanuel, Karl Rove, Hugh Hewitt, and Tim Ryan discussing free and fair elections. Tickets cost $100 and can be reserved by calling the Panetta Institute (831) 582-4200.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Del Monte Golf Course, Monterey’s oldest operating course, is undergoing a multi-year revival with renovated bunkers and tee areas plus updated drainage, irrigation and walking paths. It will rejoin the TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational rotation in mid-November.  Monterey Herald
  • Monterey Bay FC ended its 11-game winless streak by defeating Birmingham Legion FC 2-0 Saturday at Cardinale Stadium under new coach Alex Covelo; the team will face Loudoun United FC next Saturday at 7 p.m.  Monterey Herald
  • Seven county teams extended their CCS postseason run yesterday as Carmel, Palma and Pacific Grove advanced into the baseball semifinals while North County, Pacific Grove, Alisal and Monterey reached the softball round.  Monterey Herald
  • On May 23, North Salinas’ Anarae Ashurst won the boys discus title, while Salinas’ Jaslyne Coronado and Palma’s Carolina Lorca advanced to state in the 400 and shot put respectively — a strong showing as they prepare for the state meet.  Monterey Herald
  • Former Palma quarterback Luke Rossi hit .280 for the Youngstown State baseball team this spring. His strong second half highlighted his role as a key contributor.  Monterey Herald
