- ➤ Gathering for Women Monterey reached pre-COVID attendance levels—serving 225 guests with 7,700 meals, 306 case management visits, 468 clothes closet visits, and 529 hot showers—as of April 30. The nonprofit is planning to expand its property to add a day center that will better support the growing number of homeless women in the area. KSBW

- ➤ The CHP reported that a sedan collided head-on with a semitruck on Highway 183 at McFadden Road at 12:27 p.m. on Monday — killing Olga Melnikova, 39 of Pacific Grove as investigators work to determine the cause. KSBW
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Monterey County launched an online dashboard to show water, soil and air testing results taken after the Vistra battery fire in Moss Landing in January. County staff worked with experts from the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and the California Department of Public Health to update the site in phases. KSBW
- ➤ A new interactive dashboard on the Moss Landing Battery Plant website now lets users view water, soil, and screening test results from the local area dating back to Jan. 17 & follows scientists finding toxic metal levels over 100 times normal at Elkhorn Slough after a recent plant fire. - ➤ The Monterey County Water Resources Agency and the Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency joined forces to ease groundwater overdrafting in the Salinas Valley Groundwater Basin—efforts are underway to manage water quality and quantity across a 90-mile span of aquifers. - ➤ The city announced on May 5th that new no parking signs will be placed along streets such as Acosta Plaza, Montana Street and Alma Avenue as the street sweeping schedule takes effect after the grace period ends on July 31st. Some residents believe the move will keep streets cleaner—others worry it will worsen parking shortages on already crowded roads. KION
- ➤ Monterey County launched its new Moss Landing Vistra fire dashboard to show water, soil and air testing from the January 17 fire (using data from the EPA, California Department of Toxic Substances and local health agencies) and the grassroots group Never Again Moss Landing (which added screening results) so visitors can click on testing spots for details.
