  • Monterey County Office of Education recognized its Teachers and Employees of the Year at the Embassy Suites in Seaside on Friday. Biology teacher Gary Cannon was named overall Teacher of the Year & will represent the county in the state’s 2027 competition while receiving an enhanced cash prize.  Monterey Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, millions of neon-blue by-the-wind sailors are washing ashore along local beaches — drawing interest as scientists study record warm winters. Researchers urge residents to track sightings via a citizen science app to help decode these unusual aggregations.  The Californian
  • Carmel Owls, a nonprofit on the Monterey Peninsula, is installing platforms for great horned owls to naturally control rodents. Volunteers installed eight platforms last week — eight more are planned this week, and the group aims to set up 35 platforms this year while expecting owl nesting by next April.  KSBW

  • Four Californians are being monitored for Andes hantavirus exposure related to a cruise ship outbreak, with two already home and two in a secure Nebraska facility — officials said the virus rarely spreads between people.  KSBW
  • Montage Health partners with Monterey Peninsula Unified School District to host a Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Symposium today in Monterey at the Ohana Center, 6 Lower Ragsdale Dr. The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and features high school drug prevention projects and naloxone demonstrations.  Monterey Herald
