COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Loaves, Fishes, and Computers in King City received a $20,000 grant today at an Internet Awareness Day event to provide low-cost computers and computer literacy classes to local families. Forty brand-new laptops were given to the first families who attended — and since 2009, the Salinas-based nonprofit has distributed over 15,000 devices and taught more than 3,000 locals.  KSBW
  • A procession was held today in Monterey County to honor fallen officers—starting in Marina, moving into Salinas, and ending in Greenfield, where a service took place at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The event included special recognition for officer Ryan Kenedy, who died on duty in King City earlier this year.  KSBW
  • Monterey Skates is holding a soft launch of its new roller rink at the Monterey County Fairgrounds today from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for current roller skate owners, with tickets at $10 and features including a club-quality audio system (light show and snack bar).  KSBW

CRIME NEWS

  • A Salinas man, Luis Carranza Torres, 40, was sentenced to three years and eight months in state prison for committing arson & spraying a woman in the face with tear gas.  Monterey Herald
  • Justin Luis Calderon, 33, from Salinas was found guilty of commercial burglary, vehicle theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving without a license after a two-day trial – he is scheduled to be sentenced on May 30.  Monterey Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cal Fire suspended burn permits on May 8 in Monterey and San Benito Counties due to warmer weather and dry conditions increasing fire risks. The agency said 17 fire engines are ready to respond and urged landowners to adopt safety measures—call 911 if smoke is seen.  KION
