  • Trader Joe’s is launching its six new Summer Fun Mini Insulated Totes in local stores on Wednesday, May 20, where they will sell for $3.99 each. The 1.5-gallon totes come in six designs for snacks + drinks.  The Californian

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in California jumped to $6.16 per gallon on Wednesday, up 18 cents in one week and more than a dollar since before the Iran war. Reports show that the state's crude oil supply has stayed steady.  KION

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hartnell College, in partnership with Salinas Valley Health, will expand its nursing program enrollment by 50% with a $1.5 million grant distributed over three years to ease the local healthcare shortage.  KSBW
  • Monte Bella Elementary School held a groundbreaking on Wednesday for an 8,000 sqft performing arts center that will boost student and local arts. The center, due to finish in 12 months, will have a 200-seat stage and spaces for cultural groups (like Aztec Dancers).  Monterey Herald
  • A cybersecurity breach on Canvas has raised alerts among local institutions, with a threat from group ShinyHunters demanding contact by May 12.   • Local agencies and partners unveiled a new climate resiliency plan for the Pajaro River Watershed on May 7—spanning 18 months of work featuring measures such as native plant restoration and levee construction. An economic study shows Monterey travel spending hit a record $3.3 billion last year, a 4% jump.  KAZU
  • The California State Parks Foundation released its Best of California’s State Parks poll results on May 7, naming winners in 12 categories such as best state parks for camping, hiking and birdwatching across 24 counties. HEALTH NEWS

  • California officials are monitoring residents who were on a cruise ship with a hantavirus outbreak on April 24 — none have shown symptoms, and the public health risk remains low.  KSBW
  • Salinas native Kristen Mussen survived a rare hantavirus infection she contracted during a Sierra Mountain trip in 2023; doctors at CHOMP quickly placed her on life support after testing negative for flu and COVID before confirming her condition + Mussen said seeing her mother helped her know she would recover.  KSBW
  • Salinas Valley Health received an overall A rating from Leapfrog Group today based on its scores for errors, infections, and patient falls (it earned top marks for leadership and nurse care but remains average for dangerous bed sores and below average for surgical complications).  KSBW
