COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Watsonville Law Center plans to open a new office in Salinas as early as July to meet the growing demand for free legal services among low-income families in Monterey County. The center will hire up to five employees, including two attorneys and a community engagement coordinator.  Monterey County Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The SPCA warns Pacific Grove residents not to interfere with deer fawns this fawning season since six fawns have been harmed by well-meaning rescues — urging pet owners to give deer extra space to prevent dangerous encounters.  KSBW
  • Retired Navy commander Ron Eby leads the Reserve Otter Monitoring Project at Elkhorn Slough to track and study sea otters in the estuary. The volunteer-led effort, started in early April, has changed scientists' views of otter habits and eelgrass health (which stores carbon and prevents erosion).  KAZU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County CalFresh recipients are waived from the federal work requirement until Oct. 31 due to high unemployment rates. Approximately 8,700 able bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) must meet new work or training rules after the waiver expires.  Monterey County Now
  • Monterey County held a special meeting Tuesday, May 5 — addressing potential H.R. 1 impacts on Medi-Cal patients, including funding cuts and increased county workload — while the California State Park Foundation honored Pfeiffer Big Sur for camping, Point Lobos for day trips, and Big Basin Redwoods for hiking in its annual poll.  KAZU
  • Monterey County officials said they are processing over 200 short-term rental applications with easier permits for homestays and limited vacation rentals, while commercial rentals need zoning review (a new online map now shows approved and pending permits) as staff work to bring operators into compliance.  Monterey Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula got its second C grade yesterday from Leapfrog for rising infection rates & efforts in care improvement. Montage Health Properties bought Carmel Rancho Shopping Center for $37.5 million & will build a new medical campus to provide better care.  Monterey County Now
  • The FDA has classified a recall of Horizon Organic chocolate milk boxes for a packaging seal issue that may cause swelling or spoilage, affecting over 63,000 cartons in California and three other states. Consumers with packages marked Aug. 14 or 15 should discard their product and contact Horizon at 1-888-494-3020.  The Californian

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cal State Monterey Bay’s baseball team won its fifth consecutive CCAA title and now heads to San Bernardino for the tournament, with its first game scheduled for 2 p.m. today. Coach Walt White credits the team’s rapid roster turnaround (including standout transfer James Starkus) for its record-setting performance.  KSBW
  • The Monterey Bay Sirens will begin their inaugural season with a match Saturday, May 9 at Cardinale Stadium & face Stockton Cargo at 7 p.m. Head coach Laura VanWart said she is eager to see community and young fans support the team.  KSBW
