CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Brandon Turner, 34 from Marina, was sentenced to four years and four months in state prison for domestic violence causing great bodily injury and for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s office. Monterey Herald
- ➤ A Seaside man named Joseph John Cubbage, 56, pleaded no contest to felony elder abuse and misdemeanor resisting after he threatened his ex-wife and held out for over two hours during a police order in February—he will be sentenced on May 28 to three years of probation with a four-year term if he violates probation. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Friday morning, over 180 students with disabilities from the Monterey County Office of Education enjoyed a field day at Robobank Stadium in Salinas—playing baseball, soccer, bowling, and engaging in sensory activities. Volunteers from Carmel High School, teachers, and parents organized the event—ensuring each student participated fully outside the classroom. KION
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pure Water Monterey began using recycled water from Salinas food processors on May 1 through an agreement with the City, Monterey One Water, and the Monterey County Water Resources Agency (the deal runs through October with two possible six-month renewals). The agreement lets water be stored in the Seaside groundwater basin for future use on the Peninsula (without affecting the Salinas Valley basin) while the city upgrades its wastewater facility. KSBW
- ➤ Three agencies reached an agreement that will pump 1 million gallons per day of excess wash-water from Salinas’ industrial wastewater system serving 25 vegetable processing plants to Monterey One Water. After cleaning, the water will be injected into the Seaside Basin for storage (officials said the project supports water reuse) (the plan is scheduled to begin soon). Monterey Herald

- ➤ A rabid bat was found in Del Rey Oaks this week and tested positive for the rabies virus when Hitchcock Road Animal Services helped near the 100 block of Carlton Drive after an owned pet was exposed, which has been placed under quarantine +officials advise pet owners to ensure vaccines are up to date+. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ A group of 12 Salinas kids aged 8 to 12 earned silver at the AAU qualifiers and will travel to Houston to compete in the 59th Junior Olympic Games in 7x7 flag football from July 25 to July 27 — the first time the event is held at the Junior Olympics. KSBW
- ➤ On May 2nd, teams competed in the PCAL track and field championships across four divisions. In the Gabilan Division, Hollister came first in both girls and boys events while winners in the Santa Lucia, Mission and Cypress Divisions were St. Francis and Pajaro Valley, Stevenson and King City, and Monte Vista and Pacific Grove—finalizing the meet results.
