CULTURE NEWS

  • May brings a rich array of classical music events. The Calidore Quartet performs at Carmel’s Sunset Center Saturday with a pre-concert talk at 6:30 p.m., Monterey Peninsula Voices presents 'Roots to Gospel' at Compass Church in Salinas on May 8, and Monterey Symphony wraps mid-month with guest lectures.  Monterey Herald
  • Ticket sales for the California Rodeo Salinas begin next week on May 5 at 10 a.m. online, with additional windows on May 6 & May 7 and in-person sales starting June 1; the rodeo runs July 16-19 with its carnival from July 10-19.  KSBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Salinas reached $6.12 per gallon today, with Monterey at $6.14 and San Benito at $6.10 for regular unleaded. Experts say the surge is tied to global supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hephaestus Robotics, a team of 25 students from nine high schools, won the Monterey Bay regional competition at Watsonville High School Saturday and will head to the MATE ROV World Championship in St. John's, Newfoundland (Canada) in July to compete in the Ranger Class.  KSBW
  • La Joya Elementary School begins construction on a Therapeutic Intervention Program facility designed to support students facing emotional and behavioral challenges. The project in Bolsa Knolls will add four classrooms, a restroom, and a parking lot and is expected to finish by the end of the year.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Boutonnet Farms in Castroville is battling a diamondback moth surge that is harming broccoli and cauliflower crops as rising pesticide resistance forces farmers to use more chemicals; Monterey County officials say that without California’s approval of a new tool used in 49 states, current methods are inadequate *a serious challenge*.  Monterey County Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Salinas Valley Health’s mobile clinic now provides free childhood vaccines through the CDC’s VFC program and has administered nearly 400 doses to 150 children since approval last July. The clinic will visit a local middle school on Friday, May 1 for a back to school vaccination event.  Monterey County Now

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Marina Station will bring over 1,600 homes to the area near Imjin Parkway, offering 19 floor plans that include affordable options along with parks and conservation spaces — 240 units are for sale now, with 30 move-in-ready by August and townhomes coming early next year.  KSBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Monterey Bay FC fired head coach Jordan Stewart and hired Alex Covelo as its new coach on Wednesday — the club announced Covelo minutes after Stewart’s dismissal.  Monterey Herald
  • Robert Wickens returns to the IMSA Monterey SportsCar Championship at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca with his No. 36 DXDT Racing Corvette. The rolling start begins Sunday at 1:10 p.m.—he aims to build on his strong performance in Long Beach with improved hand controls and a push for a podium finish.  Monterey Herald
