  • On April 19, 71-year-old Tai Huynh offloaded 3,854 pounds of fish from his boat Four Daughters at Moss Landing for Lusamerica, with the incidental catch going to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Vietnamese boat people—refugees who fled after the fall of Saigon—continue to pass on their fishing skills while supporting local families in need.  Monterey Herald

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Today at 3:25 p.m.—a vehicle collided with a train at 1124 San Juan Road near Royal Oaks, causing about 200 gallons of diesel to spill with officials noting that leakage could reach up to 2,000 gallons and one person was injured and taken to a hospital.  KSBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Cal State Monterey Bay said Tuesday its Otters for Life statue was defaced in what officials believe was an attack against student housing, and any individual found responsible — including students — will face full penalties as the investigation continues.  KION

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire officials on the Central Coast warned that rising temperatures and drying brush can lead to dangerous wildfires—residents should clear gutters, remove dead vegetation, and avoid risky activities. Local agencies are boosting training and planning to hire extra seasonal staff to stay ready for emergencies.  KSBW

  • On April 29, Rep. Jimmy Panetta introduced the Central Coast of California Conservation Act that would bar new oil and gas leases in the Central California Planning Area, including Monterey Bay — a move to protect local waters and jobs — and the bill now awaits further action.  Monterey Herald
