Daniel, a local artist, handcrafts medals at his backyard studio for the Big Sur International Marathon—continuing a family tradition started by his mother-in-law, Kathleen Kelly.

He molds, stains, and paints each medal by hand before packaging them for all race distances.

The Big Sur Marathon is led by an all-women team—Mimi Hahn, Michelle La Salla, and Jennifer Edwards—who are planning safe race operations with support from local areas like Salinas.

They will complete safety checks on Highway One and get ready for 10,000 runners.

Monterey County runners are taking on the Boston to Big Sur marathon challenge by running the Boston Marathon today with only a few days’ recovery before the Big Sur race.

Kelsey Alves set a personal best in Boston and aims for a top-three finish at Big Sur, while veteran Rick Baca explained his recovery routine (including cold plunges and regular massages).

Simon Ricci defended his title as the Big Sur Marathon men's champion while Serena Burla, a masters runner, won the women's race on April 27th — she clocked 2:49.40 to finish the race.
