Over 20,000 UC healthcare researchers and technical workers plan a statewide strike on May 1 to protest a hiring freeze that they say harms patient care and research (according to UPTE).

They demand that the system reverse the freeze and address staffing gaps.

Local governments now stream council and town hall meetings online after the COVID-19 shutdowns forced a rapid switch to remote access, and residents can join through popular platforms like YouTube and Zoom— although some officials say technical issues and disruptive interruptions sometimes occur. Cities such as Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Seaside report that virtual meetings have improved transparency and participation while still leaving room for those who prefer in-person discussions.

Interim, Inc marked its 50th anniversary by providing over 270 beds and a range of housing options for low-income adults with serious mental illness across 18 sites in Salinas, Monterey and Marina.
