Community Human Services received a $60,000 grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation on April 25th to support its Safe Place Youth Shelter and Monterey Peninsula Outreach Program for homeless youth.

The grant will boost services like crisis intervention, counseling, and job support—helping at-risk youth move toward permanent housing with a 60% success rate.

Soledad police are investigating a homicide that happened Thursday night near 1700 Vosti Avenue when 42-year-old Francisco Ochoa was found with multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene despite attempted life-saving efforts—no suspect has been identified.

Salinas and Monterey County school districts will benefit from $500 million in state funding to buy 1,000 zero-emission electric school buses.

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on April 23 that the buses are expected to cut 18,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year (an amount equivalent to removing more than 4,000 cars from the road) and help the state reach carbon neutrality by 2045.

On Tuesday, Salinas City Council voted 5-2 to repeal a rent control program that capped rent increases and set eviction protocols after only four months in operation.

City staff reported the program earned over $1.4 million from 10,963 rental units+ it covered its own costs, but uncertainty remains on fee refunds+ the employment of three program staff is still to be decided.

Dr. Mike Davis will run his 94th marathon Sunday at the 38th Big Sur Marathon using his run-walk-run method that many runners have adopted for its benefits.

He said the breaks make the race more enjoyable and help him feel the endorphin boost he needs.

Runners joined a 5K pub run on Thursday to warm up for the Big Sur Marathon on Sunday, April 27th.
