  • San Lucas Union Elementary School District unveiled new athletic facilities behind campus on Wednesday. The track, soccer field and sand volleyball court include a shaded pavilion with WiFi and outlets to benefit students, and officials say the project is part of efforts to boost community engagement.  Monterey Herald

  • Record ocean temperatures continue to affect coastal waters after records set on Apr. 24 (a marine heat wave is linked to rising jellyfish numbers, harmful algal blooms, and shifting seafood supply), so beachgoers should check local advisories before heading out.  The Californian

  • Big Sur organizers ask runners to bus in as Highway 1 will be closed— they must be at one of seven Peninsula spots by 3:45 a.m. for a 4 a.m. bus, with return shuttles from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Race materials are at the expo or Transportation Desk.  KSBW
  • After finishing the Boston Marathon in under 4 hours, Dan Shapiro is now preparing for the Big Sur International Marathon tomorrow at 6:45 a.m., with local KSBW coverage beginning at 7 a.m. He uses an interval method (4 minutes run, 30 seconds walk) that helped his recovery after previous races.  KSBW
