ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Monterey County Regional Fire confirmed a structure fire on the 22300 block of Capote Dr near Salinas on Thursday—firefighters contained the blaze to a garage by 12:25 p.m. and are investigating its cause since the structure was unoccupied. KION
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Monterey County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Rodrigo Roy Marquez, 45, in Castroville around 1:30 p.m. on April 23 after a K-9 detected nearly 500 fentanyl pills on him along with cocaine, crack, and heroin — he had multiple outstanding warrants including a violation of his Post Release Community Supervision and is held on no bail with an additional $90,000 bail for further charges. - ➤ Since April 11, the SPCA rescued 16 weak pelicans found at Monterey Peninsula Landfill, in a Royal Oaks neighborhood, and near Community Hospital—birds too thin to fly—and is treating them at its Wildlife Center. Donations will help pay for the extra fish and supplies needed to care for the birds. Monterey Herald
- ➤ Residents and business owners in Moss Landing have demanded clear cleanup instructions and medical testing guidance after January’s battery fire raised environmental and health concerns — they say their homes and properties need safe decontamination. County officials reported that over 35,000 battery modules have been removed under EPA oversight — a new test data dashboard will launch next month to improve transparency. KSBW

- ➤ Governor Gavin Newsom announced over 1,000 zero-emission school buses for California; three local school districts—South Monterey County Joint Union High School District, Pajaro Valley Unified School District, and Soquel Union Elementary School District—will receive buses to reduce 18,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, which equals removing 4,000 cars from the road. - ➤ United States Rep. Jimmy Panetta introduced the Central Coast of California Conservation Act of 2025 on Earth Day — a bill that would stop new leasing for oil and gas work along the coast from Mendocino to Santa Cruz — to protect marine life and coastal economies.
