CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jonathan Rojas, 21, was convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting Ricardo Gonzalez on Dec. 31 when he was 17 on Heidi Drive—police evidence linked him to the crime and he now faces a life sentence with his sentencing hearing set for May 27. KSBW
- ➤ A criminal gang called the Murder Squad terrorized Salinas from 2015 to 2018 by hunting rivals and innocent residents, killing 11 and injuring 17, and authorities—working with local and federal agencies—continue to arrest and prosecute more members. KSBW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Friday evening, a new mural honoring the 32 braceros who died in the 1963 bus and train collision was unveiled in Chualar. Seaside muralist Hanif Panni spent several weeks on the masterpiece—titled 'legacy of the braceros mural'—which marks the first remembrance in about 60 years in the town. KION

- ➤ The Monterey County SPCA urged residents in Salinas not to handle wild fawns because deer mothers hide their babies to protect them. The group said to contact trained technicians if a fawn shows signs of injury or distress — such as labored breathing or unusual behavior. Monterey Herald

- ➤ Gov Newsom blasted DOGE for ending AmeriCorps services early and vowed to sue after volunteers were notified they would exit by April 30—he criticized the move as blocking volunteer aid during state emergencies.
