  • This week, crews installed forms for a bridge abutment and wing wall along Highway 218 as part of the 1.5-mile Canyon Del Rey Segment of the FORTAG project in Del Rey Oaks. The work will help create a 28-mile paved bicycle and pedestrian trail connecting local parks and preserves.  Monterey Herald
  • Big Sur Fire is asking hikers to help locate Ruger, a friendly German Shepherd mix that went missing Friday at Cienaga Camp (15 miles from the Pine Ridge Trailhead) after a helicopter extraction startled him during a medical emergency; two search teams hiked Sunday and may head out again today.  KSBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Carmel will close its doors on Friday, May 22 after more than 60 years of service. Owner Daniel Medina said post-COVID challenges and a struggling economy made it impossible to sustain operations.  KSBW

  • A new study found that California Rodeo Salinas and ongoing events at the Salinas Sports Complex generated $21.8 million in economic output in 2025, boosting local spending + supporting neighborhood businesses.  Monterey Herald

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The recreational salmon fishing season opened Saturday on the Central Coast, granting anglers a chance to catch Chinook salmon while following a two-fish daily limit and a minimum 24-inch rule (rough weather reduced boat launches).  KSBW
