COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Salinas will celebrate National Community Development Week with a Thursday showcase at Hebbron Family Center (featuring Sherwood Rec Center renovations and subsidized apartment projects) and a Tuesday City Council meeting at 4 p.m. at the Salinas Rotunda. The events highlight local efforts to fund community projects.  Monterey Herald

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A state ban now stops blackjack games that use a third-party banker in Salinas cardrooms; Bankers Casino must submit a compliance plan within 60+ days while legal challenges are pending. The rule does not affect traditional house-banked games played at casinos.  KSBW
  • Cannacruz, a local marijuana dispensary, is moving its cultivation operations from Monterey County to Watsonville because of strict regulations. Co-owner Grant Palmer said increased inspections and costly permit issues forced an overnight shift.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jim Newman, a former NASA astronaut and current Naval Postgraduate School professor, highlighted two alumni serving as commander + pilot on the Artemis II crew as they continue testing key maneuvers while heading toward the moon. The achievement shows the school’s continuing impact on space exploration.  KSBW
  • Monterey County Probation Department hosted a graduation for 14 youths from its first life skills and soccer pilot program at Juvenile Hall in Salinas. The program, developed with San Jose Earthquakes and the Twinning Project, taught teamwork and discipline and organizers plan to offer it again.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • California taxpayers are reminded that state and federal returns are due April 15, with an automatic state extension through Oct. 15 + free filing and refund tracking options available online.  The Californian
  • Small farm and food bank advocates urge the state to boost funding as federal cuts strain the farm-to-table chain; over 110 farmers rely on the Local Food Purchase Assistance program. The revised state budget in May will need to secure the food supply + help prevent further food insecurity.  KAZU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Stevenson junior Charlotte Morrow (a promising water polo talent) has committed to join the University of Pacific team in 2028. She built her reputation on the Stevenson squad and now looks forward to competing at the next level.  Monterey Herald
