  • Gas prices in California rose to an average of $5.71 per gallon on Monday from last week’s $5.65 as traders factor in potential Middle East oil disruptions and higher spring demand — analysts expect an additional 20 to 30 cents per gallon increase in the coming weeks.  The Californian
  • Diesel fuel prices over $7 per gallon are hurting fishing on the Central Coast. Local fishermen say fuel costs (nearly double last year’s prices) may force higher seafood costs as AAA reported an average of $7.52 per gallon.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Thursday morning a 4.6 earthquake shook the Santa Cruz Mountains and was felt along the Central Coast & experts confirmed it is the largest quake in the range since the 1989 Loma Prieta event, occurring 14 miles from that epicenter.  KSBW
  • Harbor seal monitors Kim and Thom Akeman confirmed six pups were born as of Wednesday, marking the start of pupping season; they expect 50-60 pups this season (last year saw about 70-80 pups).  Monterey Herald

  • County housing and community development seeks public feedback on fair access to healthy environments in 11 disadvantaged unincorporated areas, including Boronda + Castroville. The effort aims to ensure all communities receive essential resources.  Monterey Herald

  • Walmart in California recalled certain 29-ounce Great Value dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets after tests found unsafe levels of lead with a best if used by Feb. 10. Consumers are urged to discard or return the product if found in their freezers.  The Californian
