COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Emergency crews began repairs Friday near Castro Road off Aguajito Road after a main break affected 52 customers with discolored water, low pressure, or no water. Repairs will take about seven hours, and customers are advised to run water at either the lowest or highest level (per American Water).  KSBW
  • Former CHOMP CEO Jay Hudson, who died recently at 88, was remembered by former executive Steven Packer for his steadfast leadership and community service.  Monterey Herald

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire late Thursday night destroyed the Tassajara meditation hall and damaged a part of the library in Carmel Valley as firefighters responded from 12:30 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. and center staff quickly contained the blaze (no injuries were reported).  KSBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Walgreens will pay a $6 million settlement after prosecutors said it overcharged customers and sold expired over-the-counter products in California, including local stores near Salinas. The settlement requires the chain to start new consumer protection policies with a price-accuracy guarantee.  KSBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • State gas prices increased to an average of $5.65 per gallon on Monday (EIA reported) from $5.38 last week as traders adjust for market tensions and rising spring demand. Analysts predict prices might climb 20 to 30 cents more in the coming weeks.  The Californian
  • AAA reported yesterday that gas prices on the Central Coast neared $6 per gallon, with Santa Cruz averaging $5.80 while Monterey and San Benito exceeded the state average, and diesel priced about $7 due to $100 crude oil costs, leaving drivers concerned about rising expenses.  KSBW

  • Residents will file state and federal tax returns by April 15, with California granting an automatic extension to file until Oct. 15 + free online filing available for those meeting income criteria. Check refund statuses on state and IRS websites.  The Californian

  • A new, highly mutated COVID variant called Cicada—detected in California—is being tracked by local health officials who say it causes mild upper respiratory symptoms. Residents are advised to test early and follow public health guidelines.  The Californian
