ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cal Fire and Cypress crews are clearing debris at Jacks Peak Park to build a shaded fuel break that will slow fires and protect local wildlife. The work is expected to finish in four weeks as it improves access for emergency services.  Monterey Herald
  • County officials reviewed mixed test data on heavy metal fallout from the battery plant fire at Moss Landing on March 17, noting concerns in areas around Elkhorn Slough, while researchers plan to compile results and may work with Vistra to fund further environmental tests.  Monterey County Now

  • Lawmakers in California, including Salinas Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, proposed renaming Cesar Chavez Day to Farmworkers Day following allegations against the former labor leader. The state holiday on March 31 would be renamed to honor the broader farmworker movement.  KION
