COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofit housing developer CHISPA (Monterey County’s largest private nonprofit) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 295 Main St. in downtown Salinas on March 6, where community leaders and supporters joined to honor the historic building’s acquisition.  The Californian
  • Monterey County and Soledad opened the El Sendero Interim Housing Facility Monday on land once used by a large encampment near the Salinas River. The 14 modular-unit project launched in 2024 with a $4.7 million grant to ease the transition to permanent housing (officials said more beds will be available).  KSBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Trader Joe’s confirmed a new large tote bag with lavender handles and a pink logo while pastel mini totes will be available in local stores mid March (release times may vary by location). CRIME NEWS

  • Elon McLoughin, 27 from Daly City, was reported missing after leaving a parking garage in Monterey on March 7 while riding his blue bicycle with camping gear; authorities believe he intended to camp in Big Sur and have launched a search.  KSBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • California gas prices rose for the second straight week, reaching an average of $5.09 per gallon on Monday, up from $4.47 last week + the prices remain about 45% higher than the national average and 14% above last year's levels.  The Californian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A recent report shows nearly half of California teachers plan to retire in the next decade, which may lead to staffing challenges for local schools. The survey found teachers are also concerned about student discipline and class sizes (currently around 29 instead of the ideal 20 to 24).  The Californian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monterey officials say the water supply has improved after recent upgrades, but local leaders advise careful management to avoid overuse. They stress the need for continued conservation to keep supplies steady for the community.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Salinas soccer coach Gabriel Campos (head coach of the Everett Alvarez team) received the Golden Whistle Award for building a powerhouse that went unbeaten in two regular seasons, made three CCS title trips, and won a CIF Nor Cal championship. He dedicated the honor to all PCAL coaches.  KSBW
  • Monterey Bay FC signed midfielder Ryuga Nakamura to strengthen its lineup as the team prepares for next weekend's games. The signing was announced earlier this week to add depth in the midfield.  Monterey Herald
