COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lifeguards urge more recruits to join after dangerous rescues along the coast, and a tryout is scheduled for Saturday, March 7th at 9 a.m. at Del Monte Beach — candidates must pass a set of physical tests to qualify for the role.  KSBW
  • Salinas-based Taylor Farms committed a $1.5 million challenge grant on Mar. 3 to boost the Regional Soccer Complex; the donation is part of The Match campaign—a $3 million effort for eight new soccer fields and facility upgrades set to finish by spring for 2027.  KSBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA data showed that gas prices in the area increased by 11 cents overnight Tuesday due to rising oil costs from conflict updates. Prices reached 272 cents per gallon compared to 299 nationally, which could affect local commuters.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents gathered at the district meeting today to press for better campus security and transparency following recent alerts at Alisal High and staffing cuts in student support services. District leaders outlined secure campus protocols (with over 200 dedicated staff) and promised more public forums to address concerns.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County has received $2.8 million through California’s Homeless Housing, Assistance + Prevention Program to support housing solutions for the unhoused, while Salinas City Council reduced sweep notice times from 72 to 48 hours affecting roughly 1,250 residents. Advocates warn the change may lead to more frequent sweeps.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Salinas girls and Alvarez boys advanced to their CIF NorCal semifinals after wins on Tuesday—a 1-0 victory for the girls at The Pit and a 4-1 win for the boys over Clayton Valley Charter. Both teams will host semifinal matches Thursday at 5 p.m.  Monterey Herald
  • Salinas native Drew Dalman, a Pro Bowl center for the Chicago Bears, is retiring from the NFL at age 27, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter. He signed a three-year, $42 million contract on March 13, 2025 after playing for Stanford, Atlanta, and Chicago.  KSBW
  • Yesterday, Palma’s boys basketball team won 73-59 over Christopher in the State NorCal Division III playoffs, led by Harreld and Suich who combined for 49 points. The team will travel to face Cornerstone Christian on Thursday at 7 p.m.  Monterey Herald
  • Colin Huang tied the CSUMB golf record with a round of 63 at the Visit Stockton Invitational — finishing tied for fifth, while Ethan Jackson homered in three straight games to power MPC baseball to a win over Los Medanos. Several others from CSUMB, MPC, and Hartnell received honorable mention.  Monterey Herald
