ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Feb. 16 a hiker was rescued when Santa Lucia Creek rose nearly 3 feet near the Arroyo Seco trail system during a winter storm, with CHP helicopter crews trekking on foot to safely escort the hiker to Arroyo Seco Campground.  The Californian

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rev. Jesse Jackson visited the Central Coast several times, campaigning in 1988 and later supporting labor unions in Watsonville in the 1990s. His work helped raise awareness of worker rights and left a lasting impact on the community — a significant part of local history.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monterey Peninsula College District has committed nearly $100 million+ from Measure V funds to expand and modernize the Marina campus, marking the largest facilities investment in its 75-year history. Improvements will proceed under plans developed after the November 2020 voter approval.  Monterey Herald
  • IGNITE is a joint effort between the City of Salinas, the Boys and Girls Club and UC Santa Cruz’s Gear Up Program to boost high school graduation and post-grad success for low-income students. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Flooding and road impacts continue in Salinas as a multiday storm brings several inches of rain to the Central Coast; more rain is expected, and snow may fall at Highway 17 summits (caution for drivers) today and Thursday morning.  KSBW

FINANCE NEWS

  • Barry Dolowich, a local tax expert, explains that a pay raise only taxes extra earnings at a higher rate (the marginal rate) rather than taxing all income at the same rate. He advises reviewing tax withholdings if your situation is complex.  Monterey Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Plans to open a new medical school to ease a local doctor shortage have been announced, with the program set to start next May. It will admit six students each year (with plans to expand) while offering classroom training at Davis and clinical training on the Central Coast.  KSBW
