COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Farms Together, the local food bank program, faces a shortfall as federal cuts have ended funding for over 500 farms statewide including Salinas’ Induchucuiti Organic Farms + many others. State leaders may step in to secure funding before the program ends in July.  Monterey Herald
  • PG&E reported an outage (first noted at 10:24 a.m.) Monday morning that left 935 customers in Freedom and near Watsonville Airport without power. Repairs were underway to restore electricity by 4:45 p.m. Monday.  KSBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After Monday's overnight storms caused Santa Lucia Creek to rise 3 feet, the CHP helicopter — facing challenging conditions — rescued a stranded hiker near the Arroyo Seco Trail and flew him to the Arroyo Seco Campground, where CAL FIRE and AMR personnel were staged.  KSBW
  • A sinkhole formed on Monday near Hartnell College at West Alisal Street & Homestead Avenue, and crews are assessing the site with repairs yet to be scheduled.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cal State Monterey Bay is expanding its College Corps program after receiving a $9 million grant & the program will add Hartnell and Monterey Peninsula colleges to award up to $10,000 for 450 service hours. The program will nearly triple its student cohort from 70 to 100 each year.  The Californian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • California will see a warm, dry spring as NASA marks the spring equinox on March 20. The forecast follows a brief storm on Feb. 16 & comes after predictions from the Old Farmer's Almanac that April and May in the area will have above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall.  The Californian
  • Residents in Bolsa Knolls north of Salinas are facing regular flooding when the local creek overflows, and neighbors say county help has yet to arrive. Frustrated community members call for prompt action by local officials.  KION

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Highway 1 remains closed from one mile south of Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn to Ragged Point Inn due to rockslides and debris — crews will reassess the road by daylight today.  KION

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Despite rainy weather and unexpected flooding, holiday visitors continue to explore Big Sur to take in ocean views and scenic landscapes while locals advise slowing down on slick roads + checking for mudslides. A resident suggests having a generator ready if power goes out.  KSBW

  • Collin Morikawa ended a 28-month stretch without a win by claiming his seventh title at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, winning by one stroke after a final-hole birdie over Min Woo Lee and Sepp Straka.  The Californian
