COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kimpton Mirador Pacific Grove will host a free Super Bowl watch party tomorrow at its 150 Fountain Ave courtyard. The event starts at 2:30 p.m., with the game kickoff at 3:30 p.m. and food plus drinks available for purchase from the hotel’s restaurant.  The Californian

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Watsonville Airport will host private jets for Super Bowl weekend with a new FAA reservation system as about 1,200 aircraft are expected and the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce will hand out goody bags; a $1,500 landing fee offers a cost-effective option + a boost to the local economy.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • ReGen Monterey has signed a $5M, three-year deal with Central Coast Community Energy — supplying 3MW of landfill gas power to the grid to power more than 21 homes — with revenue reinvested in improving landfill operations and expansion plans in Marina.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to prioritize enforcement of unpermitted taco vendors by increasing collaboration between the Environmental Health Bureau and law enforcement, and they approved installation of a cement barrier at 499 Salinas Road in Pajaro. Officials plan to return with a detailed plan within 30 days.  Monterey Herald
  • The County of Monterey Housing and Community Development Department is asking Chualar residents to complete a short survey (available in English and Spanish) on the community plan to guide future growth and address local needs near schools and Highway 101; responses are due by Feb. 12. This survey will help shape upcoming workshops and revisions before board review.  Monterey Herald
  • The Monterey County Rail Extension project is extending rail service from Santa Clara to Salinas. A new Caltrain layover facility will be built west of the Intermodal Transportation Center at the end of New Street, less than a half-mile from the station at N. HEALTH NEWS

  • The California Department of Public Health warned local residents to avoid foraging after death cap mushrooms caused three deaths and liver transplants since Nov. 18 in parks around Salinas. Experts note symptoms can worsen rapidly, and doctors advise seeking care promptly.  KSBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • North Salinas high school boys basketball team won 69-36 over Seaside on Thursday night and now chases its first league title in 21 years, improving to 9-2 in Cypress Division play.  Monterey Herald
  • James Starkus hit .583 for CSUMB baseball and Catherine Calzada batted .636 for the softball team in their series opener last week — strong debuts that boosted the Otters' early season play.  Monterey Herald
  • The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am will begin practice rounds Monday after Super Bowl 60 ended in Santa Clara, featuring top golf stars and boosted ticket sales when Travis Kelce joined the amateur play (ticket sales jumped by about $50,000 in eight hours). Many fans have stayed on for the charity event.  KSBW
  • Salinas High flag football star Alissa Escutia was honored as an NFL Latino Youth finalist in San Francisco with impressive stats (1,738 receiving yards, 200 rushing yards, 25 touchdowns) and a 3.9 GPA. She will join a private Super Bowl fan event ahead of her debut at Levi's Stadium Sunday.  KSBW
