ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters rescued a fisherman swept into the water at Granite Cove – about 10 miles south of Carmel on Thursday. Mid Coast Fire Chief Cheryl Goetz warned that dangerous coastal conditions can lead to strong riptides and advised swimmers to move sideways to avoid hazards.  KSBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • U.S. employers cut 108,435 jobs in January—the worst first‑month total since 2009—raising concerns for California's tech, logistics, and trade-reliant sectors as unemployment in the state hit 5.5%. Economists warn that further slowdowns and tariff changes could raise cost pressures on local businesses.  The Californian
  • State gas prices reached $4.18 per gallon Monday, rising 14 cents from last week+ they remain about 46% higher than the national average, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.  The Californian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Salinas — Pleasant weather is expected to continue into the weekend as a high surf advisory holds, with inland temperatures reaching the upper 70s to low 80s while coastal areas remain cooler.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cal Am asked state regulators to keep the cease-and-desist order on Carmel River water hookups, arguing that Pure Water Monterey and its recent expansion are too unstable to replace the order. No review date has been set by the Water Boards, leaving housing starts on the Monterey Peninsula in limbo.  Monterey Herald
  • Greenfield Youth Council is promoting pedestrian and traffic safety with social media videos and school surveys while urging youth to attend city hall meetings to drive community improvements. Formed in 2023 (with seven council members and three youth commissioners), the council launched this project in response to rising local traffic incidents.  KSBW
