  • On Jan. 29, Partnership for Children, a nonprofit that helps families with seriously ill children, celebrated its 10th anniversary — opening new offices at the Rodgers Center for Children’s Health to continue providing transportation, financial support, and social connections for about 260 families in the tri-county region.  The Californian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chris Dalman, a former NFL player and Super Bowl champion, has returned to Salinas to coach and teach at Palma School, drawing on his journey from Mission Park to the 49ers to inspire students — he now serves as the school’s president.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At Brothers Ranch near Prunedale, researchers with the Elkhorn Slough Foundation and CSUMB are converting fire-prone eucalyptus into biochar to improve soil fertility and water retention for local organic farms. The project — which uses a mobile carbonator — is funded through grants and wildfire resilience efforts.  Monterey County Now
  • The Costa Central Water Agency is working with state officials to provide clean water alternatives as nitrate from farming has contaminated local wells. The agency (with public comments open until Sept. 9) plans to install filters to secure safe drinking water.  KAZU
  • Local experts and researchers are working with farmers to test improved fertilizer and cover crop methods that reduce nitrate seepage into groundwater in the valley. The state water agency will offer alternative water to more than 14,000 residents over the next 10 years.  KAZU
  • Local water agencies are building a registry of small private wells to guide drought plans under the state's Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Registration was extended until March 31 as officials work to verify thousands of wells in the Salinas Valley.  Monterey County Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Panetta, Alma Adams, and Sen. Peter Welch have reintroduced the Opportunities in Organic Act to ease high organic certification costs and boost USDA technical assistance for Monterey County farmers. The bill would expand cost-share payments and training programs — a plan supported by several agricultural groups.  Monterey Herald
  • Tax season is underway and residents can check federal refunds via the IRS tool and state refunds using the online service (with SSN, ZIP, and refund amount). Online filings yield faster refunds, with federal ones arriving in 21 days and state ones in three weeks, while paper returns take longer.  The Californian

  • A developer has proposed building 90 homes on the former Carmel Valley airfield on Lupin Lane in Carmel Valley Village — spurring neighbor concerns over open space and local events like Santa’s Fly-In.
