  • The SURF! Busway project is underway in Marina, affecting Del Monte Blvd and nearby avenues where crews build an accessible crosswalk and improve transit signals (work will continue through spring 2028) to reduce congestion and connect riders with Monterey-Salinas Transit.  Monterey Herald

  • Salinas Airshow introduced Kristine Ware as its new executive director during a press conference at the Municipal Airport and honored founder Jim Gattis with awards (including induction into the ICAS Hall of Fame) while the 45th show will feature returning USAF Thunderbirds.  The Californian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, José Hernández, a former migrant farm worker who became an astronaut, visited Hollister to promote literacy at a San Benito County education event. He credited his second-grade teacher for inspiring his study in engineering and his work on the Space Shuttle mission in 2009, aiming to empower kids.  KSBW
  • Two CSUMB film students, Jameson Paull and Julian Sumano, received $1,500 scholarships as part of the Monterey County Film Commission’s 2025 Director Emeritus Richard Tyler Film Student Scholarship Award program. The 2026 competition for film students opens Feb. 1 - Feb. 22 at 11:59.  Monterey Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Registered nurses at Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula voted to join the California Nurses Association this week under the National Labor Relations Board. The union (affiliated with National Nurses United) will represent 800 nurses as they prepare to elect a bargaining team and negotiate a contract.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Salinas Regional Soccer Complex announced a $250,000 partnership with Costa Family Restaurants as it enters phase three of its $45 million expansion that began in 2018. Future plans include seven new grass courts, a sand court (for beach soccer and volleyball) and a field house and wellness center.  KSBW
  • Alisal girls' basketball snapped Salinas' 16-game winning streak by defeating their cross-town rivals 51 to 46 and moving into a tie for first in the Gabilan Division.  Monterey Herald
