  • Spanish language news is diminishing in the Monterey and Salinas region as TV, radio and print options shrink, leaving Latino audiences with less local coverage; former anchor Sandy Santos said reduced resources force outlets to shift to public affairs shows plus rely on social media updates.  Monterey County Now
  • Sendero, a transitional housing development for unhoused residents, opened in Soledad on Jan. 22 with 13 moving in at the city-owned shelter at 990 Los Coches Drive.   • Local print publishers in Monterey County are adjusting to rising costs and changing revenue models by repurposing spaces. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Salinas City Elementary paused inter-district transfers to manage a projected budget deficit amid declining enrollment and rising costs countywide.   • Monterey County Free Libraries is updating 16 branches as the Gonzales location moves to a new community center and the Pajaro renovation concludes late this year. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new AI system named EMBERPOINT aims to help first responders detect, prevent and fight wildfires across California. (PG&E, Salesforce, Lockheed Martin, and Wells Fargo) are building the venture, which will feature demonstrations later in 2026 as wildfire risks increase by August.  KSBW
  • A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect along the central coast due to increased sneaker wave risk from late Wednesday night until Friday morning. Local officials advise beachgoers to steer clear of the water’s edge as shifting offshore winds bring cooler temperatures this morning and lighter winds later today.  KSBW

  • Orangetheory Fitness in Salinas is offering a $2 per day membership deal until Saturday, Jan. 31 to help locals stick to their New Year’s fitness resolutions + the program provides expert coaching and workouts for all fitness levels.  The Californian

  • A MetLife study showed Californians searched most for the Maltipoo as their top dog and for the Burmese as their leading cat, with cities like Bakersfield & San Francisco showing high interest.
