COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Jan. 11, a gray fox with a corrugated pipe — stuck around its neck — was rescued in Corral de Tierra and taken to the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. It is receiving cleaning, suturing, and medication and will stay under care for several weeks.  Monterey Herald
  • Alliance On Aging has announced a free tax preparation service for older adults and people with disabilities starting Feb. 2 at several Monterey County sites (services are available in English and Spanish), so early appointment scheduling is encouraged.  Monterey Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A gray fox is recovering at the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center after a pipe around its neck was removed on Monday morning near Corral de Tierra. Neighbors had trapped the young male with syrup-soaked bread, and he is now receiving treatment (including surgery) for deep wounds.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County Supervisors approved $100,000 to fund the development of the Alisal Arch, a new public landmark in East Salinas. The decision (4-1 vote) supports a partnership with the city, private organizations, and donors to maintain and enhance the arch.  KSBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • KSBW 8 and health care partners held the second annual blood drive from Jan. 23 to Jan. 26 in Salinas, collecting 412 units that could help up to 1,236 people (the event was hosted at Montage Health, Salinas Valley Health, Natividad Hospital, Dignity Health, and Mee Memorial Hospital).  KSBW
  • Montage Health reached a new agreement with Anthem Blue Cross before Jan. 31 to keep in-network coverage for Anthem members at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and Montage Health services across Monterey County (continuing a 20-year partnership).  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Monterey Bay FC will launch a USL Women's team for the 2026 season (the new team will join the W League's Western Conference in the NorCal Division). The club stated the move will strengthen its commitment to the entire 831 community and develop new opportunities for female soccer players.  KSBW
