COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is being upgraded after Friends of Laguna Seca spent $3.2 million on paving runoff areas, drainage, and renovated suites, garages, and restrooms + the group must invest $10 million in total while the county extended the master plan deadline for new amenities later this year.  KSBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two new See Monterey initiatives will deepen visitor connection in Monterey County — including Monterey 1000, a yearlong celebration of county history — while The Lodge at Pebble Beach reopened last October after extensive renovations that reimagined its seasonal dining area.  Monterey Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Twelve teams from the Central Coast began their robotics season at Chartwell School in Seaside as part of the FIRST Robotics Competition for high school students. They received key parts to build robots for athletic challenges and have eight weeks to prepare for district contests — aiming for state and world championships in mid-April.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Beachgoers in Salinas are warned of hazardous conditions and sneaker waves along the Pacific Coast over the next 6 to 10 days as a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for valley areas and above normal warmth is expected—residents should check water conditions before venturing out.  KSBW
  • Community leaders and environmental groups met tonight to oppose a federal plan for offshore drilling that could harm marine life and local economies on the Monterey Peninsula — written comments to BOEM are due Jan. 23.  KSBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kaiser Permanente has begun sending notices to eligible members about a $46 million privacy breach settlement linked to data sharing on its websites and apps from November 2017 to May 2024; members in California must file claims by March 12, with final approval expected in May.  KION
  • Scientists report that avian flu may soon affect elephant seals along the California coast. Experts are monitoring the situation for signs of disease spread.  KION
