ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MBARI measured ocean carbon by launching its Sinking Ecology Robot from the research vessel Rachel Carson (departing Moss Landing Harbor before sunrise) on a brisk December morning. Lead oceanographer Colleen Durkin said the trial followed tests that began in July.  Monterey Herald
  • California is now drought-free for the first time since 2000 — a change driven by heavy, steady rain that refilled most reservoirs — though experts warn that dry spells may return later this season.  KION
  • Monterey Abalone Co. and a Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary ecologist said the California Fish and Game Commission unanimously extended the red abalone harvesting ban until April 2036 — a move aimed at protecting coastal ecosystems. The measure was reported yesterday.  KAZU
