  • Residents of Bolsa Knolls experienced heavy flooding on Sunday afternoon, prompting neighbors to distribute sandbags, clean up, and even build retaining walls as County Public Works delivered assistance.   • From Jan. 5 to 18, Monterey Bay venues offer live music + comedy and yoga sessions, with acoustic sets and restorative yoga at local wineries, Hannibal Buress’s stand-up in Santa Cruz, and RJ DeMarco’s performance in Monterey inviting everyone to enjoy a lively start to the new year.  The Californian

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Dungeness crab fishing season opened on Monday but many fishermen stayed ashore because of dangerous weather and price disputes stemming from new state rules that limit gear to protect whales — Monterey Fish Company said boats will head out soon with expectations for fresh crab by week’s end.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • PG&E said a county-owned tree fell on a distribution line Monday, causing outages for over 300 residents and crews restored service to all but 96 customers by noon. Light showers are forecast this morning with drier skies Tuesday afternoon — Murphy Road remains closed until inspections finish.  Monterey Herald

  • Former Stevenson standout Evan Johnson made a key interception to secure BYU's Pop Tart Bowl win over Georgia Tech in Orlando. Carmel grad JT Byrne also scored a touchdown for Georgia Tech, highlighting local talent making national headlines.  Monterey Herald
